On the recommendation of Bob Zmuda
(Producer and former manager to the late Andy Kaufman), radio talk show
personality, Dick Hunter of the Big Dick’s P1 Wild Ass Circus on The Ticket,
kindly invited Parapsychologist Dr. Larry Montz and ISPR’s Daena Smoller, to
join the show in a broadcast from Suite 105 (the room in which Janis Joplin
died) at the Hollywood Gardens Hotel.
Joining Big Dick Hunter and cast of his
show were Dick Smothers Jr., adult film stars Ron Jeremy and Ed Powers and
Dennis Hof, owner of the world famous Moonlite Bunny Ranch in Carson City,
Nevada…oh, and a Bunny too!
The following is the re-cap release posted
at Big Dick Hunter.Net, about the trip and happenings in Hollywood!
The P1 WAC L.A. Experience
8/9/04
Monday morning, 1:30am
This is the first chance that I have had to sit down
and write since we got here. These road trips never lack for excitement. I was
a little worried about the Cowboys theme making this one generic, but we have created our own auxiliary excitement. First off, a 22 hour Capps Van Rental van ride helps to get the spirit
of adventure going.
I’ve still got my buddy Rick James on my mind, and as tough as it was to ramp up and
do a show Friday after hearing the news, hitting the road with friends has been really therapeutic. Tonight, I spent the evening
with some friends that he and I shared … More on that later. We got to LA about 10pm Saturday
night, and my girl and I checked in to room 105 of The Highland Gardens. It was
in this very room that on October 4th, 1970, Janis Joplin dropped dead from a heroin overdose.
I have to tell you that my girlfriend was an uncharacteristically hard sell on
this concept. This is the girl who is always up for anything with anyone. She
actually uttered the words “I’m cool with the porn scene, but this creeps me
out”. Nonetheless, she reluctantly agreed to stay in this place of death for 48
hours, with the caveat that I not leave her alone in the room … Deal. Before we
went to bed, she had me check under the bed to make sure that there were no
monsters rooming with us … Seriously.
We ate a late meal at Mel’s Diner on Sunset and then headed up into the Hollywood Hills,
where we snapped a shot of the last house that Lenny Bruce lived in.
Speaking of death sites, this was his. Before I got back to the room, I started getting
calls from Hugh Hefner’s Midsummer Night’s Dream party. The first was from
Dennis Hof, of course. The second was from Shy Anderson of the Dallas
Desperados. He was there with his father-in-law, Jerry Jones. Realizing that I
had two friends calling me minutes apart, both from the game room in the Playboy Mansion, I described
the two of them to each other and they ended up having a conversation. I love
bringing people together.
Sunday morning brought an uncharacteristically early wake up call. It’s true
that I normally sleep until 1 or 2 in the afternoon, but when we take the show
on the road I am generally to excited to sleep … There is simply too much to
do. I’ll sleep when we get home next weekend. We went to a Dodger game that
started at 1pm, and my overriding question from that experience is
“What is so bad about watching a sporting event in an old stadium that doesn’t
cost the tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars? I would say that I prefer it, in fact.
The fear of LA traffic has been instilled in us from those who arrived last week, so at
the moment we are allowing ample time to get everywhere. That meant leaving the
game a little early in time to assure a 5pm arrival at
the hotel where we would be rendezvousing with Dick Smothers Jr. and Ed Powers.
Dennis Hof called and said that he would meet us at Barney’s Beanery, which was
where Janis Joplin spent her final hours. Everybody had a great time getting to
know each other, and Dennis graciously picked up the tab.
Back at the hotel, Dr. Larry Montz of the
International Society for Paranormal Research joined us, along with one of his
clairvoyant investigators, Daena Smoller.

They had come recommended by Bob Zmuda as some people that could help us channel any
spirit or vibe that might be dwelling in room 105 of The Highland Gardens.
Gathered around a table in the center of the room were the two of them, myself,
P1s Mike D. and Chubbs, Dennis Hof, Dick Smothers Jr., Ed Powers, and Ron
Jeremy who arrived at the room just in time for the real fun to start.

We asked questions of the two experts for over an hour, and then it happened … Ron
Jeremy had raised the point that if spirits have the power to speak from beyond
the grave, why not offer something more direct than moving your wallet from one
side of the night stand to the other? Dr. Montz responded that spirits have
their own electro-magnetic energy, and precisely as he made his assertion … The
power went out. The power went out, but ONLY in our room. We captured this on
mini disc, as well as video. It was the single most perfect thing I have ever
experienced on the show. As we sat in the darkness coming to the realization of
what just happened, my girlfriend exclaimed “I’m out of here”, and bolted from
the room. Hours later, I still can’t believe it. The hotel manager even came to
the room to verify that he had not touched the breaker.
As was the case with the LA House Party at The Mandrian, no one wanted to leave
after the taping, and this cast of wild ass characters sat around the room
where Janis Joplin took her last breath and talked well into the night.

lively conversation after the show.

We wound up at The Viper Room to check out a band or two, and then did a little
late night shopping at The Hustler store where I found the hand prints of Seka,
a P1 WAC guest and Rhyner default.

We’ll sleep for four hours, and then we’ve got more stuff to do.
